Security & Buying Online

At Housemakers.co.uk, we take security very seriously and make shopping online as safe as shopping in our stores.

Secure Mode - https://

Your browser will go into secure mode as soon as you access the 'checkout' or 'login' pages, i.e. before you enter any personal or payment details. You can check that you are shopping in a secure environment by looking for either a locked padlock or a key icon in the grey bar at the bottom of your screen.

Being in 'secure mode' means that all of your details are encrypted to help keep them secure. Encryption creates billions of code combinations to protect each transaction made on our site, so your card details cannot be viewed by anyone else using the Internet. If you are using one of the more recent browser versions, our site supports 128 bit encryption and therefore keeps your details as safe as possible at all times.

Secure Socket Layer (SSL)

We only accept orders that are placed using Secure Socket Layer (SSL). This technology prevents you from inadvertently revealing personal information using an insecure connection. During payment, we also ask for your card billing address as an additional security check. New security checks like the card signature code (CVV) have recently been introduced to protect your credit card details online. No credit or debit card details are stored once your order has been processed. This is why you can save your favourite delivery address but need to enter your card details each time you order.

Cookies

We recommend that you always close down your Internet browser when you have finished shopping online, especially if you use a shared PC. This will delete temporary Internet cookies from any sites that you may have visited.

Payment Providers

We as a company never have access to your credit card details, when you checkout and enter your card details they are processed via Sage Pay, a renowned Payment Service Provider (PSP) who are PCI DSS Level 1 accredited, the gold standard of PSP acolades. We currently accept orders paid for by Visa, Mastercard, Visa Delta, Visa Electron, Solo or Maestro (Switch).

Credit Card Anti-Fraud Measures

We also undertake fraud checks in connection with our Banking Partners, Google Checkout or our Specialist Anti-Fraud Partners.  Additionally, a number of anti-fraud measures are in place, including Address Verification & ID Checks.  These checks are in place for the protection of all our customers.  In certain circumstances, we may also request verification of address details in the form of a recent utility bill to confirm your billing address details or your date of birth to confirm your ID.  This in no way indicates we believe the transaction to be fraudulent, it is merely an additional security check for the benefit of our customers to help prevent credit card fraud.

Data Protection

Housemakers is a registered Data Controller in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998, as such we are required to protect any details you give us.

Protecting Your Security

To ensure that your credit, debit or charge card is not being used without your consent, we will validate name, address and other personal information supplied by you during the order process against appropriate third party databases. By accepting these terms and conditions you consent to such checks being made. In performing these checks personal information provided by you may be disclosed to a registered Credit Reference Agency which may keep a record of that information. You can rest assured that this is done only to confirm your identity, that a credit check is not performed and that your credit rating will be unaffected. All information provided by you will be treated securely and strictly in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.

Age Restricted Sales

Certain products sold on our website may be age restricted.  Under the Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006 knife sales can only be made to persons over 18.  We are obliged to check the age of every person purchasing a knife from us, whether it is a steak knife from a cutlery set or a carving knife.  If you pay by credit card, you will be over 18 since banks only issue credit cards to persons over 18, we therefore restrict all orders for knives to credit card payments only, any order made with a debit card will be refused and refunded.  Credit card payments will be fraud checked as explained above.  These measures will prevent sales of knives to underage persons.
